Adult Classes – Ballet

Description:
Our adult classes are a fun and light hearted for both the inexperienced and experienced dancer. Tap shoes required for tap, leotard or comfortable clothing can be worn in ballet and any soft dance shoe for hip-hop or ballet (ballet slippers recommended for ballet) Check the schedule to see what genres are offered.
Dance with Me (parent participates in class)
Ages: 18 —36 months

Description:
A fun introduction to the world of dance focusing on creative movement, classroom environment, and rhythm.
Ballet Fundamentals - Advanced
Enrollment: 6 1/2 and up (younger ages by recommendation only) Levels 3, 4 and 5 meet twice a week
Class Time: 45 min to 90 min

Note: It is not uncommon for students to participate in the same level for 2 years.
Ballet or “technique” classes (for students age 6 and up) are the core foundation at Interpretations Dance Academy for all styles of dance. They focus on developing a solid ballet technique with emphasis on understanding correct body placement, proper use of turn out, coordination of the upper body (epaulement), and use of arms (port de bras). Interpretations Dance Academy exposes students to aspects of traditional Vaganova (Russian), Cecchetti (Italian), and American techniques. Class begins with work at the barre to build strength and coordination, followed by center exercises, culminating in a grand allegro combination or variation. Clear explanations of exercises and theory help students use the ballet vocabulary in a simple, practical way that leads to increased technical understanding, healthy physical development, and lifelong enjoyment.
Combination Classes (Ballet, Tap and Jazz)
Ages: 6 1/2 and up

Description:
This class is designed as an introduction into the varying styles of dance and begins to build a foundation for more challenging classes.
Competition Teams
Enrollment: 5 and up by audition only
Class Time: Varies- Separate cost information available
Description:
IDA has multiple competition teams available. Being a part of the team requires auditions and a high level of commitment for the more serious dancer. Team members are required to enroll in 2 Ballet classes per week and a conditioning/stretch. Call the studio for more information.
Divas - Ages 5 - 7

Contemporary
Enrollment: 9 and up
Class Time: 45 min to 1 hour
Description:
Contemporary dance encourages dancers to be versatile in their expressions, being able to portray a wise array of movement styles and emotion. It focuses on spacial and body awareness, use of body weight, floor works, leaps, turns, efficiency of muscle usage and safe body alignment.
Hip Hop
Enrollment: 5 and up
Class Time: 45 min to 1 Hour
Description:
Hip-hop is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style, personality, face animation, and expression to the movements. Hip-hop dance requires students to have the muscle control, strength and stamina to successfully perform moves. Therefore the class may include upper and lower body conditioning as well as a rigorous warm-up to help prepare students for more intense movements.
Fine Arts Club (not currently offered, if interested contact the studio)
The Fine Arts Club is a diverse, all-inclusive program for preschool aged children Its fun and active curriculum allows children to develop social skills and talents at a young age. Children will participate in dance, yoga, and fitness classes while enjoying music, art, and drama lessons. This is your child’s opportunity to develop their confidence, spark imagination, and foster creativity. It’s time to get active and connect with others with a small class size in a large studio space.
Dance: Introduce your child to the world of dance! They will learn the basics of Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, and Creative Movement in a fun and encouraging environment.
Yoga: Your child can enjoy the many benefits that yoga has to offer. The introduction of basic poses, stretching, and learning tools will create a foundation for calmness and focus.
Fitness: Obstacle courses and active games are incorporated to keep children moving and grooving! A focus on fitness will improve their coordination, body awareness, and muscle memory.
Music: Children will enjoy nursery rhymes and classic children’s songs while playing with drums and bells. Music and singing will help students transition between activities and set the mood for a fun and positive class.
Art: Painting, coloring, cutting, gluing, assembling… The possibilities are endless with arts and crafts time! Your child will experience hands-on creativity and make crafts aligned with the day’s theme.
Drama: The day isn’t complete without imaginative role-playing for your child! Acting builds self-esteem and confidence at a young age. Our drama component involves games, singing, dancing, and imaginative play.
Tot Hip Hop
Enrollment: Ages: 5 -7
Class Time: 30 minutes
Description:
This class is designed to provide the student a foundation in the Hip Hop style of dance. In addition they will improve their flexibility, increase strength and control and learn to coordinate their movements to the music.
Jazz
Enrollment: 7 and up
Class Time: 1 hour - Ballet class strongly recommended for level 1 & 2. Required for level 3,4 and 5

Description:
Jazz is a true American dance form that appeals to everyone because of its energy, variety, and vitality. Jazz Dance classes exploring different styles such as Broadway, Latin, Classical Jazz Funk, Swing, Rhythm, Bollywood and more! Chosen music varies including jazz, swing, blues, pop, soul and funk. Classes begin with a warm-up to develop strength, flexibility, correct alignment coordination and body isolations. Turns leaps and progressions are included (as appropriate and safe per level), and culminates in extended dance combinations. The goal is to develop dancers who are expressive, dynamic, musical and passionate. It is not uncommon for students to participate in the same level for 2 years.
Musical Theater
Enrollment: Ages 6 and Up
Class time: 45 Min to 1 hour
Description:
Musical theatre dancing is less of a particular style, and more of a description of dancing that is rooted in the diverse history of Broadway musicals. Musical theater students will need to use their knowledge of ballet, tap, and jazz. Musical theater choreography and dancers incorporate acting and place a high focus on musical interpretation.
Lyrical
Enrollment: Course has prerequisites, must take ballet
Class Time: 1 hour

Description:
Lyrical dance is emotion-based movement that is inspired directly from music lyrics while telling a story. Movement can be fluid or abstract. This class is designed for intermediate to advanced students with previous training in ballet. Students will explore partnering and weight sharing exercises combined with basic techniques and skills from ballet, jazz and modern. As students progress through each level the curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate. It is not uncommon for students to participate in the same level for 2 years.
Must be enrolled on a ballet class.
Modern
Enrollment: 11 and up
Class Time: 1 hour
Description:
Students will learn the basics of Graham and Hawkins release-based modern technique, beginning on the floor and working up to standing and moving across the floor in leaps and combinations. Classes will emphasize core integration and initiation, spinal awareness and flexibility, and practical application of modern dance fundamentals. Other styles of modern will be explored such as improvisation and non-traditional partnering weight-sharing technique. Must be enrolled on a ballet class.
Pointe
Enrollment: 11 and up by teacher recommendation only – meets twice a week
Class Time: 45 min (follows an hour of ballet off-pointe)
Description:
Students 11 and older with strong ballet technique, sufficient core strength, ankle strength and alignment can be recommended to go on to study 'en pointe'. Maturity, attendance, commitment, work ethic and attitude play a significant role in consideration for pointe. All students must first complete one year of pre-pointe strength training. Completing the year of pre-pointe does not guarantee placement in pointe shoes. They will be re-evaluated at the end of the year then carefully fitted for pointe shoes. 2 ballet classes and 2 pointe classes are required to stay en pointe for the student in training. It is not uncommon for students to participate in the same level for 2 years.
Preschool Medley
Enrollment: Ages 3 - 6
Class Time: 45 min
Description:
Our preschool program is a combination class designed to teach our youngest dancers to learn basic ballet and tap movements in a positive and fun environment. Our teachers build their lesson plans to ensure proper technique and terminology is taught throughout the class while exploring various styles of dance including ballet, tap and creative movement.
Attire: Any pastel colored leotard, tights, ballet slippers and tap shoes. Hair secured back or up.
Tap
Enrollment: 6 and up
Class Time: 1 hour

Description:
Tap Dance is a timeless art that combines dance and percussion. Tap dancers in musicals, movies, television, commercials, and concerts inspire us with their infectious rhythms. Tap Dance classes (for students 6 and up) explore the two traditions of rhythm tap (hoofing) and Broadway tap. Class begins with warm up exercises in the center that increase control, proper tap technique, coordination, and rhythm, followed by across the floor exercises that teach dynamics, shading, phrasing, and musicality, concluding with extended rhythmic phrases and improvisation exercises. The goal is to develop tap dancers that are equally strong musicians, dancers, and performers. May also involve some tap dance history, learning about such legendary greats such as Fred Astaire, the Silver Belles, The Nicholas Brothers, Sammy Davis, Jr., Gregory Hines, Jimmy Slyde, Bill “BoJangles Robinson, Ann Miller, Charles “Honi” Coles and Donald O’Connor. It is not uncommon for students to participate in the same level for 2 years.
